There is probably no one reading this article who has not been in some way touched by cancer. According to the latest statistics, there are over 1,600,000 new cancer cases diagnosed in the USA every year and unfortunately, the conventional treatment options are toxic and have high failure rates providing temporary remission in the majority of cases. Cancer is a complex disease but there is good news! Over the years, various research studies have shown that cancer is a metabolic disease and it can be successfully managed by integrative healthcare providers trained in the metabolic treatment modalities. Cancer cells acquire changes in metabolic pathways to support their growth and proliferation. A key feature of cancer cells that supports their metabolic transition is the Warburg effect. Furthermore, studies have shown that cancer stem cells are a subset of cells responsible for tumor initiation, progression, and recurrence. The hallmarks of cancer are a set of acquired traits that distinguish cancer cells from normal cells and include characteristics such as sustained proliferation, evading growth suppressors, and resisting cell death, among others. Natural treatments such as IV vitamin C, curcumin, and vitamin D have shown promising results in cancer treatment. In addition, the Repurposing Drugs in Oncology (ReDO) project identified many drugs with anticancer properties – these repurposed drugs can be used to deal with various cancer characteristics and hallmarks. Understanding the metabolic aspects of cancer together with natural treatments and repurposed drugs may represent a new and effective therapeutic strategy for functional integrative healthcare providers.
